Vineyard and terroir
The vineyard
An exceptional vineyard, both singular and diverse
The vineyard at Domaine du Grand Montmirail forms a natural cirque exposed to the South and South-East. The Dentelles of Montmirail rocky bar offers an exceptional shelter against the prevailing Mistral wind. Spread across the appellations of Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Beaume de Venise, our plots are located between 300m and 400m above the sea level. The yields are naturally low. The grapes are very aromatic, with aromas of black fruits and spices. The diversity of our soils offers us an exceptional richness and a great complexity in the many cuvées I we create.
Geology
Witness the Jurassic era
Among the Gigondas estates, Domaine Du Grand Montmirail has some of the most diverse and ancient soils in the appellation. Black marl, limestone and gypsum from the Jurassic period of the Mesozoic era (circa -135 to -155 millions years B.C.) are next to more recent clay and calcareous sediments. This is extremely rare and makes it an absolutely exceptional terroir. This diversity of soils results from the vertical eruption of the Dentelles 6.5 millions years ago, which has exhumed many types of more ancient soils previously buried deep forming piling stratas.
